Enlarged Zoom Applicant Training Will be Provided this Year

Our Call for Applications and our online application will be available beginning November 2, 2020.

Our new, expanded Zoom Applicants Workshop will be offered November 17, 2020. The 9:30 am session will address organizational requirements including federal and state legal requirements as well as a discussion of required financial statements and is particularly recommended for newer organizations. The 1:30 pm session will focus on the requirements of our application and tips on putting together a successful application. This Zoom Workshop will be recorded and can be viewed later.

Before you begin your application, carefully review the descriptions of the grants we are offering this cycle at Our Grant Program page (link at left). Applications are due January 15, 2021 at 11:59 pm; your application may not be added to or changed after it is electronically submitted.

You may apply for one or more of the grants we are offering using a single application. Note an organization may submit only one application and may receive only one grant.

We focus our grantmaking on our mission: to improve the quality of life for women and families in Anne Arundel County.

We seek applications to fund all, or portions of, “programs” or “projects.” A project represents a single, focused endeavor. A program could be the main function of your organization or could be a collection of projects that are connected and complement each other in enabling the program to achieve its overall objective. AAWGT will fund a portion of an organization’s core program (including operational expenses) or a separate, free-standing project.

In completing your application, remember the goal is to clearly describe your program/project. Sometimes shorter descriptions are clearer than longer ones so don’t repeat and don’t feel there is a requirement that you use every character allowed for your answer.

Describe the issue or need your program/project addresses. Why is it significant? What have you done to determine there is community need and interest in your program/project? Make sure your proposal describes a cohesive program/project that will meet your clearly-described need with positive outcomes.

Here we are seeking a clear, concise but full description of your proposal. It should include an action plan, strategies and timelines. If you have done this program/project before, tell us about it. Why has your organization chosen to pursue this particular program/project? Make sure your proposal is described in sufficient detail so that its intended outcome is clear. If applicable, did your organization’s thinking on racial disparities have any impact on the proposal?

Describe the planned participants in your program/project including number, age, gender, race/ethnicity, how selected, how retained, and whether a fee will be charged. Demonstrate that you understand the multiple needs of your participants and how to address those needs in the delivery of your program/project. If you have done this before, what has been your success with recruitment? Do you anticipate any problems in retaining participants? What other barriers to participation do you anticipate?

Envision the specific qualitative impact that your program/project will have on the lives of participants. Describe in detail how your program/project will benefit participants, their families and/or the community. How will you measure or specifically evaluate whether your program/project will achieve the desired results?

Outcomes must be clear and measurable. How will you know your program/project had the desired impact? The description of outcomes will vary depending on the nature of your proposal. And while some may serve a large number, others may make a profound difference in the lives of a few. Describe the specific changes in participants’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, behavior, condition or status that you anticipate. Your analysis of outcomes should utilize data to the extent possible. Where metrics aren’t possible, a before and after analysis may assist. Significant change may take several years to achieve both in organizations and in people’s lives: acknowledge that if applicable and indicate what allowance you have made for that in your plan.

We are interested in any research that supports your program/project. If so, please identify and summarize it. The research may address the purpose of the proposal, the type of program, or the measurement of outcomes.

What prior experience does your organization have that will support your success with this program/project? Do you have the necessary staff on board at this time? If not, where are you in the hiring process? Be specific about who will do each portion of the program.

AAWGT encourages organizations to evaluate whether a partnership with another organization to achieve a joint goal might strengthen their proposal. While a grant is officially awarded to just one organization, we encourage the forming of program/project partnerships among organizations. Note that only the organization actually receiving the grant funding need be a federally recognized nonprofit.

If your organization has existing partnerships with other organizations that will support this program/project, please discuss them. If a similar program/project exists, explain how yours is different, how you are collaborating, or what niche you will fill. If you have weak areas, explain who will partner to support this activity or who will provide technical assistance. Information relating to the partner organization and the role of each should be fully described in your application.

Defining Gross Receipts

Our Fundamental Needs Grant requires that the Gross Receipts of an organizational applicant not be over $100,000. We define Gross Receipts the same as the IRS, which uses Gross Receipts to determine the version of tax form 990 an organization has to file.

Guidance for Larger Organizations

A large organization with existing multiple sources of revenue may appear to be too well funded to need a grant. However, sometimes existing funding may not be applicable to the program/project being applied for, or there is something unique about your proposal that has made it difficult to fund. In that case, please clearly articulate why funding by us is necessary in the Budget Narrative field.

Maryland Charity Registration

All organizations applying for a grant must provide a Maryland Charity Registration Number or a copy of their Notice of Exempt Organization Fundraising Notice. Further information can be obtained at https://sos.maryland.gov/Charity .

Religious organizations which receive less than $25,000 annually in donations from outside sources are exempt from the requirement to submit a Maryland Charity Registration Number or an Exempt Organization Fundraising Notice. Your exemption must be explained in your application.

Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation

Your organization must be in good standing with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation and must provide its identification number in the application. See https://dat.maryland.gov/Pages/default.aspx .

In this section we provide applicants with two blank budgets that need to be downloaded, filled in, and then uploaded:

  1. The first budget needs to show the projected line item costs for the program/project. One column should show the costs for the entire program/project, the second column should list the costs you want AAWGT to fund. The final column total reflecting what you wish AAWGT to fund should match the Amount Requested (Section I) that you list earlier in the application.
  2. The second budget asks for information about non-AAWGT budget sources. If your program/project does not have non-AAWGT funding sources, please note that on the second budget template and upload. Do not submit a blank budget form.

Please note that documents may only be uploaded in Word or PDF format; please convert your spreadsheet document to PDF before uploading to Foundant.

AAWGT will provide a telephonic debriefing call to any applicant that passed our Due Diligence review, but was not on the final ballot. Debriefings are only given after grant awards have been announced in late May. Qualified applicants who wish a debriefing should do so by email to grants@givingtogether.org no later than May 31, 2021. Include your phone number. We will contact you by email to schedule a debriefing.
